Journey Latoya Allen is a native of New Orleans, LA who found refuge in Houston, Tx after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Like many young artists she sought to replicate her favorite cartoon characters from her imagination. She is a self taught artist who began her journey at age 9. With her best poster in hand she sought council of an art professor in New Orleans. He took one glance at her work and diagnosed her as "unteachable" and further elaborated that at the age of 22 she could never learn to paint well enough to become a professional artist. Despite this discouraging start she found her place at the art program at Texas Southern University. Nurtured by her professors there she graduated in 2013 and created a collection of work that reflects her background, culture and identity.
